When the Lehigh Canal was opened in 1829, Allentown
gained access to outside markets for the first time. America’s first commercially successful iron
furnace was built there, powered by anthracite coal, and Allentown is often considered
the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution.
Allentown became a manufacturing center, producing
silk in the 1880s and moving on to the making of trucks when Mack
Trucks located there in the early 1900s. After the ups and downs
of most industrial cities in the 20th century, Allentown still manufactures
steel products, industrial equipment, textiles, clothing, and other
things. The city’s prosperity has been enhanced by the completion
of an interstate highway in 1989, bringing more commerce and new residents, escaping
the higher prices of New York, Philadelphia, and other cities.
