Profile:
Denver, Colorado, known as the Mile High City because its official
elevation is 5,280 feet (as recorded on the Capitol Building stairs),
was first settled in the mid-1800s during the Pike’s Peak Gold
Rush. Originally called St. Charles in 1858, it was renamed after James
W. Denver, governor of the Kansas Territory, when it was incorporated
in 1861. When Colorado was made a state in 1876, Denver was named its
capital.

By the early 1900s Denver had become the commercial
center of the Rocky Mountain region, and a leader in livestock sales,
agriculture, and tourism, as well as its core businesses of mining
and energy. With the oil shocks of the 1970s, Denver moved into alternative
energy. By 1980 1,200 energy companies were located in Denver, and
it is still the home of large firms such as EnCana, Halliburton,
and Newmont Mining.
