Lexington, Kentucky
Profile:
Frontiersmen at Elkhorn Creek, Virginia (17 years before Kentucky
became a state), named their campsite Lexington in honor of the colonists’ victory
in the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. By 1820
it had become one of the largest and wealthiest towns west of the Allegheny
Mountains. The cultured lifestyle of its residents earned Lexington
the nickname “Athens of the West.”
