Since then the city has undergone several phases of economic boom and bust, remaking
itself first as a staging-post for the Klondike Gold Rush of 1896, then as a
center of shipbuilding in the early 20th century. In World War Two Seattle became
a departure point for soldiers fighting in the Pacific, and Boeing set up manufacturing
facilities to make military planes there. Seattle was Boeing’s head office

Starting in the mid-1990s, Seattle became a hub of software development, home
to companies such as Amazon.com, RealNetworks, and AT&T Wireless.
